Physical Education

"Of all subject areas taught in school, Physical Education is the only subject which, by the very nature of its content, has the potential to affect how a person will feel every moment of every day for the rest of his or her life."
-Educator/Author Allen Russell

Policies and Procedures

Uniforms
All students must wear a uniform for physical education.
  • Improper uniform or footwear may result in not being able to participate in class activities. Proper athletic wear is necessary for full movement, safety and hygiene. Not being able to fully participate will result in a loss of earned points toward overall grade.

Accepted gym clothes are as follows:
  • A pair of black “SV” gym shorts, sold by the school, or a pair of plain black gym shorts with name on it. Longer length is necessary for proper coverage when moving, bending and stretching. Black leggings are also acceptable for PE.
  • A gray “Spring View” Physical Education T-shirt sold by the school, or a plain gray T-shirt—NO  pockets.
  • Athletic shoes and a pair of socks.(No Crocs allowed)
  • Optional: Sweatshirts and pants are recommended for inclement weather. These must be worn over the required PE uniform. Only solid colors black, gray, red or white are acceptable.  No jackets or zippered sweat-tops will be allowed.
****School clothes are not appropriate for Physical education and will not be allowed.
  • A teacher must approve all physical education uniform substitutions.  Alterations are not allowed on PE uniforms. All clothes worn in physical education must be CLEARLY MARKED with the student’s LAST NAME followed by their first initial. SV PE staff will write students' names on their clothing.
  • The cost for PE uniforms (shirt & shorts) is $30.00 and can be purchased through the front office-cash or check only.

Locks and Locker Room Guidelines
  • The school will provide locks and lockers. All students must use a school assigned lock and locker. A fee of $8.00 will be assessed if lock is not returned. Students will be assigned a locker when they bring in a proper P.E. uniform.
  • Students are not allowed to share P.E. clothes or lockers. Students must keep their own clothes and valuables locked up AT ALL TIMES.
  • Students are responsible for their own belongings. The physical education department is NOT responsible for lost or stolen articles.
  • All lost and found items will be donated to charity at the end of each quarter.

Grading Procedures
A variety of units will be offered to the students throughout the year. Each unit lasts two to four weeks. Students in each unit are graded on:-PARTICIPATION-EFFORT-BEHAVIOR
  • Participation is emphasized in physical education at all times. In general, if a student is well enough to attend school, then he/she is well enough to participate in physical education.
  • Misbehavior, lack of effort or lack of participation will lower the unit grade one-letter grade.
  • Students not dressing in Physical Education may not be able to participate in regular activity and will receive a non-participation mark.
  • For safety reasons, big jewelry and gum are not allowed in class.

Make Ups
Physical Education make-ups will be offered during class each quarter. All students will be required to dress on these days. Students who wish to erase one non-participation mark will be allowed to perform make-ups during class. Check with your student’s teacher to see if other make up opportunities are available.

PE Excuses
  • With a parent note, a student may be excused for a maximum of THREE days. The note must be SIGNED AND DATED. On the 4th day, a doctor’s note is required. Depending on the illness or injury, the student might be reassigned to the library until their medical note has expired.
